The Wild Atlantic Way - Skipper's Update

As we leave Ireland for the Faroes the Skipper's update

Skipper - 22/05/2026

..was benign for our arrival in Baltimore. We motored most of the way to Bantry after which we were able to sail more, in chilly conditions.

Derrynane provided an attractive anchorage and a walk over beautiful beaches to the ruins on Abbey Island. The pub was shut, opening the following day. After a boisterous sail to Dingle we were storm bound for two days. Not a bad place to be stuck and we tucked into some serious seafood and learned all about the Blasket Islands, sadly abandoned in 1953/4.
The burgee staff was repaired by an engineer and replaced by Mark so we now sail under RCC colours again.

Tail winds took us to Inishmore, a spectacular anchorage from which we explored the Island, enjoying a walk to the Wormhole, a rectangular pool naturally cut in a flat rock surface beneath a cliff, fed by the sea from below and then on to the fort, a semicircle open-sided to the top of a high cliff. Not hard to guess how they disposed of miscreants. Lobster rolls for lunch.

It rained on us for quite a lot of the passage, via a remote anchorage in Broad Haven, to Killybegs. Here we paused to gather breath, re-provision and employ engineers in replacing the throttle and gear lever, which had not liked being sat on.

The last night in Ireland is in Burtonport a small village up some narrow channels, with many rocks to avoid.

We leave on friday for the Faeroes and will pass through the St Kilda archipelago. Happily we are promised tailwinds for the passage.
